Boating + Watersports
Adults do not need a license to drive a boat. However, children under 16 must pass a the SCDNR Boater Education course before being able to legally operate a boat or jet ski. Additionally, a Captain’s License is required to operate a boat for hire.
Adults do not have to wear a life vest while on a boat, but there must be a vest available for each person on the boat. Children under 12 must wear a life vest at all times.
For non-emergency assistance on the water, including SeaTow, visit our SOS Page.
If you have an emergency, always call 911!A float plan is essentially letting someone who will not be on boat know your plan for the day. This can include what time you will be taking off and returning home, areas you will be boating, etc. It’s always a great idea to let a friend or family member know your whereabouts in case of an emergency – especially if boating alone. Learn more on our Boater Safety page.
Boating under the influence is a serious offense! If an individual has a Blood Alcohol Level that meets or surpasses 0.08%, they can be charged with a BUI. Have the sober adult or a licensed youth take the helm if you have been drinking while enjoying your boat day.
